Russian hacking suspect wanted by the FBI arrested on Thai resort island

The suspect was arrested following an FBI tip and is held pending extradition for alleged cyberattacks on U.S. and European government agencies, Thai police said.

  • Police arrested a suspected Russian hacker at a Phuket hotel; the 35-year-old Russian national entered Thailand on Oct. 30 and was transferred to Bangkok earlier this month.
  • In a Nov. 12 statement, Thailand's Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau said an FBI tip led to the arrest of a suspect wanted for alleged cyberattacks on U.S. and European government agencies.
  • Seizing devices and digital wallets, police acted with FBI officials present at the Phuket hotel, arresting the suspect on Nov. 6 and transferring him to Bangkok detention that day.
  • Relatives confirmed the Nov. 6 arrest and said they planned to fight extradition, while the formal extradition request to the United States was filed; Russian diplomats in Bangkok visited the detainee and arranged family access, Ilya Ilyin said.
  • Several media outlets reported a second arrest linked to Russian military intelligence, but Thai police said only one suspect was detained; Russia Today named Denis Obrezko while official agencies declined to comment Thursday.
