Russian Anti-Putin Artist Shot Dead in Poland

Polish prosecutors say the artist was shot five times and two Belarusian nationals were detained as investigators probe a possible execution-style killing.

  • Russian artist Semyon Skrepetsky was shot and killed in the Polish city of Biala Podlaska. Paramedics responded to the scene but were unable to save the 44-year-old.
  • Skrepetsky, a native of the Altai region who lived in Poland since 2021, gained notoriety for satirical caricatures of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, and the late Alexei Navalny.
  • According to DzikMedia, the gunman shot the artist several times at close range, with two suspected killers involved. A Belarusian taxi driver allegedly drove the perpetrators to the scene before fleeing toward the Belarusian Consulate.
  • Police apprehended one suspect near the Belarusian Consulate and sealed off city exits, placing schools and day care centers under guard. Authorities continue searching for the remaining suspect, reportedly identified as a Belarusian national.
  • Three days before the killing, on Russia Day, Skrepetsky staged a one-man protest in Berlin against Putin. Reports indicate he also criticized Ukrainian authorities and was listed in the Myrotvorets database, designating individuals accused of crimes against Ukrainian national security.
