Putin, Xi Sign ‘Multipolar World Declaration’ — Days After Trump’s China Trip
The leaders rejected Western dominance and signed more than 20 agreements on trade and technology.
- On Wednesday, Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a joint declaration in Beijing focused on building a "multipolar world and a new type of international relations."
- Rejecting what they termed the "law of the jungle," the leaders claimed that attempts by countries to single-handedly direct global affairs have failed, while criticizing Aukus and Nato as "incompatible with the goals of strengthening regional peace and security."
- Beyond the declaration, the two sides signed around 40 intergovernmental and corporate documents, building on trade that reached almost $240bn last year, with Russia now importing more than 90 percent of its sanctioned technology via China.
- Energy cooperation tightened as the two nations reached an understanding on the route and construction of the long-delayed Power of Siberia 2 pipeline, which will transport 50 billion cubic metres of Russian gas annually to China.
- Looking toward long-term alignment, both sides agreed to boost scientific research and student exchanges through a "Year of Education," aligning China's 15th Five-Year Plan with Russia's development strategy until 2030.
