Russia Summons German Ambassador Amid Tensions
Moscow accused the meeting of recruiting Russian expatriates and said the separatist group has carried out sabotage near the border with Ukraine.
- On Monday, Russia's Foreign Ministry summoned German Ambassador Alexander Graf Lambsdorff to protest a meeting in Kyiv between German Bundestag deputy Roderich Kiesewetter and exiled Chechen separatist Akhmed Zakayev.
- Earlier this month, Kiesewetter met Zakayev in Kyiv, praising him for "resisting Russia's colonial and imperial hegemony" and expressing confidence the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria would regain independence.
- Russia designates the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria as a "terrorist" organization, claiming the meeting served as "recruitment" to "destabilize the social and political situation in Russia."
- The Foreign Ministry warned Berlin of "negative consequences," viewing the contact as interference in internal affairs, while Zakayev has lived in the United Kingdom as a fugitive since 2002.
- Berlin's Foreign Office rejected the accusations, with a spokesperson calling the claims regarding interactions between Kiesewetter and Zakayev "completely unfounded and baseless.
