Russia conducts rare missile test near disputed islands
Russia has conducted rare missile tests near the Kuril Islands, just days after Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the disputed islands which are located off the coasts of Japan and Russia. CNN’s Hanako Montgomery reports.
For more than 80 years, Tokyo and Moscow have been fighting for the island group. To date, therefore, there is no peace treaty.
At first glance, it doesn't make sense. Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin made his first official visit to the Kuril Islands. They are home to 20,000 people and are claimed by Japan. It was clear that this would be a scandal.
Russia has conducted missile tests in the Kuril Islands, pursuing two strategic objectives at once. With these maneuvers, Moscow is trying to weaken Japan's willingness to support Ukraine and at the same time demonstrate to Beijing its usefulness in the region.
