Russia Seizes Most Ukraine Land Since 2022 Invasion

Russian forces seized over 5,600 sq km in 2025, more than in 2023 and 2024 combined, using prolonged bombardment and exploiting Ukrainian shortages, analysts said.

  • An AFP analysis of battlefield data shows Russian forces captured more than 5,600 square kilometers in Ukraine last year, about 0.94% of the country, according to the Institute for the Study of War.
  • Ukraine faced mounting pressure throughout the year and gradually ceded territory amid manpower and ammunition shortages as Russian forces combined heavy artillery, drone warfare and relentless infantry assaults.
  • November produced the biggest monthly gain as Russian forces captured around 701 square kilometres, while December slowed to just 244 square kilometres, the smallest increase since March.
  • Russia now occupies just under one-fifth of Ukraine and has demanded Kyiv withdraw forces from the eastern Donbas region, while more than 3,000 children and parents were evacuated from front-line Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions since June 1.
  • As the war settles into attrition, diplomacy lags behind battlefield gains despite a summit planned for next week in France, Budanov said, `We will continue to do our job- to defeat the enemy, defend Ukraine and work to achieve a just peace`.
