Russia says Ukraine struck tanker in Sea of Azov
Ukraine said the strikes hit 10 tankers and four other vessels as part of a weeklong campaign to disrupt Russian fuel and logistics routes.
- Between July 6 and July 12, Ukrainian drone operators struck 90 Russian vessels in the Sea of Azov, averaging one attack every 112 minutes. Commander Robert Brovdi of the Unmanned Systems Forces reported the campaign aims to degrade Russian logistics.
- Ukrainian officials state the maritime drone campaign targets vessels transporting oil and petroleum products that help finance Russia's war. Operations aim to disrupt critical fuel supply lines and isolate Moscow-occupied Crimea from essential logistics support.
- On July 9, forces struck 12 ships and an oil terminal, while subsequent operations destroyed 21 Russian tankers. The military also attacked 53 targets in occupied Crimea, hitting navy and energy infrastructure.
- These strikes likely halted traffic through the Kerch Strait and caused overnight power cuts in Crimea, while satellite imagery confirmed damage to several tankers. Russia temporarily suspended civilian shipping through the strait and the Azov-Black Sea Canal.
- Ukraine's General Staff concluded the Ukrainian Defense Forces will persist with systematic maritime operations. "The Ukrainian Defense Forces will continue to systematically carry out measures aimed at stopping the armed aggression of Russia," officials stated.
