Russia Says No Quick Breakthrough in 'Complex' Ukraine Talks
- During brief talks in Istanbul in 2025, Russia declined Kyiv's request for a ceasefire without conditions, and no rapid progress in negotiations is anticipated.
- The talks followed over three years of conflict causing tens of thousands of deaths and millions displaced in eastern Ukraine, with Moscow demanding troop withdrawals from annexed regions.
- The sides exchanged peace roadmaps called memorandums and agreed on a large-scale prisoner swap but remained deeply divided, while Russia offered limited partial truces only in some frontline areas.
- After the discussions, Zelensky claimed that Russia intentionally struck civilian areas with rockets near the Russian border, resulting in four deaths, while Russia stated its goal was to establish a "buffer zone" in the Sumy region.
- Russian advances continue amid stalled negotiations, with officials calling for stronger sanctions and no summit likely until negotiators reach an agreement, prolonging the conflict into its fourth year.
