Russia says it fired its Oreshnik missile at Ukraine in response to strike on Putin's residence

Russia launched 18 missiles and 16 drones targeting Ukraine's energy and drone production sites in response to a Ukrainian drone strike attempt on Putin's residence, officials said.

  • Russia's military announced that it fired a hypersonic Oreshnik missile at a target in Ukraine during a massive overnight strike on energy and drone sites, the Ukrainian Air Force said the barrage included 242 drones and 36 missiles.
  • Moscow said the strike was retaliation after an attempted Ukrainian drone attack on a Putin residence in Novgorod region at the end of December, which Kyiv called "a lie".
  • Overnight, authorities reported strikes across Kyiv districts, Lviv, and Dnipro, killing four and injuring at least 22, with fires and drone parts damaging residential and infrastructure sites.
  • The strikes left 556,000 people without power and heating in Belgorod, Vyacheslav Gladkov, governor of Belgorod region, said, while Kyiv suffered water and electricity disruptions amid freezing weather and emergency worker casualties.
  • Putin said, `I will add that there is no countermeasure to such a missile, no means of intercepting it, in the world today,` while Western officials expressed scepticism and Reuters could not verify the capabilities of the Oreshnik.
