Russia Says Captured 2 More East Ukraine Settlements in Donetsk and Kharkiv Regions
DONETSK AND KHARKIV REGIONS, EASTERN UKRAINE, JUL 6 – Russia says it captured two settlements amid its eastern Ukraine offensive, with last month's advances the largest since November 2023, according to AFP analysis of ISW data.
- Russia claimed it captured two settlements on Sunday, Piddubne in Donetsk and Sobolivka near Kupiansk in Kharkiv regions of eastern Ukraine.
- On Tuesday, Russia announced the capture of two more villages, Krutyi Yar near Pokrovsk in Donetsk and Vyshneve near Kupiansk in Kharkiv, amid continued offensive operations.
- These claims followed a major Russian military advance in June, representing the largest territorial gains in eastern Ukraine in nearly seven months and marking three months of continuous progress.
- The Russian Defense Ministry stated Krutyi Yar lies almost 13 kilometers east of Pokrovsk, while Vyshneve is about 37 kilometers southeast of Kupiansk, a major front in northeastern Kharkiv.
- Ukraine’s General Staff stated that it successfully defended against 24 Russian offensives across various locations on the Kupiansk front, such as Vyshneve, underscoring the continued fierce combat despite Russia’s assertions of territorial advances.

Russian forces gain control of two settlements in Ukraine, Russian military says

Russian forces managed to capture the villages of Koptyevo and Shevchenko Pershe northeast of Pokrovskoye. According to the Institute for the Study of War, it is possible that Russia wants to use a tactical advantage - to complete the encirclement of Pokrovskoye from the north and at the same time bypass the defenses protecting Kramatorsk and Slovyansk.
