Russia pounds Kyiv with drone strikes after Zelenskiy-Trump talks

  • On September 24, Russian forces launched a large-scale overnight assault on Ukraine, deploying 282 strike drones alongside anti-ship and ballistic missiles. The Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine intercepted a significant portion of the barrage, though direct hits struck Kyiv and Odesa.
  • In recent months, Russia has escalated its air war against Ukraine by deliberately targeting critical data centers and communications infrastructure. These strikes recently left around 100,000 households in the Kyiv Region without internet connectivity, aiming to disable early warning systems.
  • Strikes on Kyiv killed two people near a maternity hospital, while Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported damage to medical facilities and residential buildings. In Odesa, head of the regional administration Oleh Kiper said blasts shattered windows across ten residential buildings and a school.
  • Attending the General Assembly in New York, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy urged the United States to provide more ballistic interceptors. Zelenskiy argued that insufficient pressure on Moscow has enabled repeated strikes, emphasizing the need to protect lives.
  • Despite high interception rates, the Air Force reported direct enemy hits in 13 locations and falling debris in 10 others across Kyiv and Odesa. Zelenskiy noted that defenses downed around 60% of ballistic missiles in Kyiv, illustrating the ongoing challenge.
