Russia, North Korea connect road bridge ahead of summer opening
The crossing is expected to handle up to 300 vehicles and 2,850 people a day as Moscow and Pyongyang deepen ties.
- On Tuesday, North Korea and Russia held a ceremony marking the linking of their first cross-border road bridge over the Tumen River, set to open for traffic this summer.
- Before this project, the only permanent link was the rail-based Korea-Russia Friendship Bridge; construction began last April following the June 2024 summit between Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Pyongyang.
- The new crossing will handle up to 300 vehicles and 2,850 people daily, according to Transportation Ministry Russia. Russian Transport Minister Andrey Sergeyevich Nikitin and Natural Resources Minister Alexander Kozlov attended the ceremony virtually.
- Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said the bridge will "develop trade, economic and humanitarian exchanges" between the neighbors. The project represents a "truly landmark stage" in relations, aiming to boost productive dialogue.
- Deepening ties between Moscow and Pyongyang have accelerated since the North's troop deployment in Russia's war against Ukraine. Both nations remain heavily sanctioned, and this infrastructure project demonstrates their growing bilateral cooperation.
