Russia Launches 426 Drones and 24 Missiles in Massive Overnight Assault on Ukraine
KYIV CITY MUNICIPALITY, KYIV CITY REGION, JUL 22 – Russia launched over 700 drones and dozens of missiles in a single night to overwhelm Ukraine's defenses, causing civilian casualties and damaging key infrastructure, officials said.
- Russia launched a record 426 Shahed and decoy drones and 24 missiles overnight, targeting Ukraine, and the attack lasted until around 6 a.m., Ukraine’s air force said.
- Amid stalled peace efforts, Bianna Golodryga tweeted that Russia is drastically increasing drone production, reflecting ongoing escalation despite diplomatic talks.
- Officials reported two people killed and 15 wounded, including a 12-year-old, while a drone struck the entrance to a Kyiv subway station where people had taken cover.
- Following the assault, Ukraine’s new Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal urged allies to speed up deliveries of American air defense systems, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz suggested financing two new Patriot systems.
- Meanwhile, a senior NATO official said the alliance is coordinating delivery of ammunition and artillery rounds, while the UK government plans a 50-day weapons drive.
