Russia detains former Radio Free Europe freelance journalist for treason, TASS says
The FSB says the 65-year-old suspect supplied information used to support cyberattacks on a local media outlet and critical infrastructure.
- On Thursday, the Federal Security Service detained a 65-year-old Chita resident on suspicion of treason, alleging the former Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty freelancer funneled intelligence to Ukrainian special services.
- Although the FSB withheld his name, local media identified the suspect as Alexander Andreyev, a former contributor to the opposition website Kasparov and the now-defunct MBKh Media.
- During the search, FSB officers seized 21 memory sticks and two phones, claiming the suspect joined a Telegram community to assist Ukraine, providing information that "temporarily hindered regional authorities" in their duties.
- Following the arrest, a judge ordered pre-trial detention, and the suspect faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted of the treason charges.
- Russian authorities have increasingly pursued criminal charges against journalists connected to RFE/RL, which the Justice Ministry designated a "foreign agent" and "undesirable" organization in recent years.
