Russian FM meets with counterparts from Sahel alliance
Russia will continue to provide military backing for the junta-led governments of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, who make up the Alliance of Sahel States, the parties said at a meeting in Niger's capital Niamey.
In Niamey, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov participated Wednesday in "high-level" consultations with the foreign ministers of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, who are members of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). According to a statement, Moscow "confirmed its commitment to continuing its support for strengthening the operational capabilities of the AES armed forces."
Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso were led by military regimes, which came to power by putschs between 2020 and 2023, which turned their backs on the former French colonial power to move closer to Russia.
