'Unstable' Tasmanian Devil Found After 15 Days on the Run
Wildlife crews found the two-year-old devil in bushland after a fortnight-long search, and veterinarians are treating her unstable condition.
On Tuesday night, searchers located Mary, a Tasmanian devil, in bushland off Kopps Road on the Gold Coast, more than two weeks after she escaped her enclosure at Paradise Country.
Paradise Country staff reported the escape occurred on June 2, with the marsupial believed to have made an "abnormally large leap" to clear her enclosure during the early morning hours.
A dozen wildlife experts backed by sniffer dogs and thermal-imaging drones conducted the search, eventually tracking Mary to bushland less than 2km from the park.
Upon discovery, Mary was in an "unstable condition" and required immediate veterinary care; she is now stable at a specialist hospital undergoing diagnostic testing.
Tasmanian devils have been extinct on the Australian mainland for more than 3,000 years and remain endangered, facing significant threats from Devil Facial Tumour Disease, a transmissible cancer.
