Rubio Orders Visiting Iranian UN Delegation to Leave NYC Ahead of Schedule
Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his delegation to leave New York earlier than planned, officials confirmed Wednesday during the United Nations General Assembly.
While President Masoud Pezeshkian left New York last week, Araghchi remained to discuss reopening the Strait of Hormuz and nuclear negotiations. The Trump administration had initially granted restricted visas for both delegations to attend the annual summit.
After weekend meetings between Iranian and Qatari mediators yielded little progress, Rubio told the delegation on Monday to leave immediately. The decision, first reported by Axios, reflects administration impatience with stalled indirect talks.
Araghchi and his team departed New York very early Tuesday, complying with Rubio's order. Rubio determined the group had "overstayed their welcome" because high-level General Assembly meetings concluded.
The expulsion concludes the Iranian delegation's presence at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. This action reflects the administration's strict posture following the stall in indirect negotiations.
The negotiations were stalled and the Iranian delegation that participated in the United Nations General Assembly was forced to leave the United States.
