Rubio launches Latin America tour to cement US influence
The secretary of state aims to strengthen ties with newly elected conservative leaders on counternarcotics and energy cooperation.
- On Tuesday, United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Colombia for the first leg of a tour across Colombia, Ecuador and Peru to discuss "enhanced cooperation in the shared fight against narcoterrorism."
- This tour follows a string of right-wing electoral victories across Latin America, aligning with the "Donroe Doctrine" of U.S. hegemony spelled out in the National Security Strategy, which Rubio, himself of Cuban heritage, helped architect.
- In Barranquilla, Rubio will discuss reconstruction after an August 10 earthquake that killed more than 330 people, with Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella requesting U.S. assistance and customs duty suspensions to support recovery efforts.
- Colombia has joined the "Shield of the Americas," Trump's coalition to combat regional drug trafficking, while the Trump administration has killed at least 227 people in the past year in strikes on what it alleges are drug boats.
- Rubio concludes his tour by visiting Ecuador to meet President Daniel Noboa and Peru to meet President Keiko Fujimori, days after the United States secured majority control of more than 65 billion barrels of Venezuela's oil reserves.
