Rubio Designates Ecuadorian Gang Los Tiguerones as Foreign Terrorist Organization
The move blocks U.S.-linked assets and follows allegations that the gang has attacked civilians, police and journalists.
- On Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio designated the Ecuador-based gang Los Tiguerones as a foreign terrorist organization during a visit to Quito to discuss regional security cooperation.
- The State Department linked the gang to narcotrafficking and violent attacks against civilians and journalists, including a 2024 live takeover of an Ecuadorian television station, noting it helps Mexican cartels move drugs.
- During his visit, Rubio said he would seek $45 million in additional security funding for Ecuador and a $10 million initiative targeting illegal gold mining, gang recruitment, and illicit finance.
- Addressing criticism of Operation Southern Spear, which has destroyed 70 vessels and killed more than 220 people over the past year, Rubio defended the campaign: "Our goal is not to go after fishermen. Our goal is to go after drug traffickers."
- The U.S. will deliver a 110-foot Coast Guard cutter and five interceptor vessels to support Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa's government, adding to seven vessels delivered this year for maritime drug trafficking enforcement.
