RSPCA warns of animal abandonment surge in the South

The RSPCA reports 24,270 abandonment cases in 2025, a 23% increase attributed to economic pressures and warns of a further winter rise amid urgent fundraising efforts.

  • Across England and Wales, charity figures show 24,270 animal abandonment incidents reported so far this year, a rise of almost 23% compared to last year.
  • Charity leaders warned the RSPCA says economic pressures and the cost-of-living crisis fuel `an epidemic of animal abandonment and neglect` this year.
  • Among recent cases were Arthur, a cat found in Worcester with burns in April, cared for by RSPCA Worcester and Mid-Worcestershire Branch, and Nibbles, a hamster found in Slough, plus Honey, a dog in Dorset, all rehomed.
  • Demand pressures mean an abandonment incident was reported to the RSPCA every nine minutes this year, with Worcestershire up to 225 incidents and Dorset’s reports rising 18.4% by October.
  • To cope, the RSPCA launched The Big Give Back to Animals appeal to raise funds for RSPCA frontline officers and provided details on the RSPCA website as rescuers brace for winter.
