Royal Mail issues notice to anyone writing addresses by hand
The postal service said dark, legible ink and left-aligned formatting help prevent smudging and improve sorting and delivery accuracy.
Royal Mail has issued advice for handwriting addresses on letters and parcels, aiming to improve sorting efficiency for the up to 6.6 billion items the service handles annually.
Clear handwriting helps postal workers and sorting machines process mail correctly, as address quality significantly affects how accurately items are sorted and delivered.
Addresses should be left-aligned on the bottom left of envelopes, avoiding punctuation like commas or full stops; the format starts with recipient's name, followed by property details, town, and postcode.
Royal Mail recommends using black ink on white labels or light-coloured envelopes to ensure strong contrast. "It's important that the address shows up against the colour of your envelope," the company stated.
For international mail, customers should place the destination country on the final line in capital letters. Those unsure of postcodes can use the free Postcode Finder service for up to 50 searches.
