Royal Ascot: Royal Ascot: Venetian Sun Shines in Group 1 Commonwealth Cup for Trainer Karl Burke and Jockey Clifford LeeLee
Venetian Sun won by a head after reverting to six furlongs, and jockey Clifford Lee said the filly would not let 50-1 Spicy Marg pass.
On Friday, Venetian Sun, the 11-8 favorite ridden by jockey Clifford Lee, won the Group One Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, holding off 50-1 outsider Spicy Marg by a head in a thrilling finish.
Trainer Karl Burke celebrated his second successive Royal Ascot victory with the filly, having previously won the Albany Stakes with the same horse 12 months ago.
Lee, who spent five and a half months recovering from a C1 vertebra fracture last year, described the win as "fantastic" after the pair struck for home a furlong from the finish.
Owner Tony Bloom called the performance "absolutely amazing," while trainer Michael Bell of the runner-up admitted to a "fleeting moment of hope" before Spicy Marg was outbattled.
Venetian Sun is likely to bid for more Group One glory in next month's July Cup at Newmarket, where she is favored at 5-2 with some firms.
