Round one over, but Fern still punching
Winter Storm Fern caused over 130,000 power outages and hazardous roads, with officials urging residents to limit travel and use warming centers amid ongoing freezing rain.
- Winter Storm Fern battered parts of Georgia and Kentucky, leaving about 80,000 power outages in metro Atlanta and northeast Georgia and more than 50,000 outages in Kentucky by Sunday afternoon.
- With rain turning to freezing rain, temperatures dropping below freezing turn rain to ice, raising risks on roads while wet ground and gusty winds increase outages in Northern Kentucky and Bowling Green through central and eastern Kentucky, Gov. Andy Beshear said.
- Crews treated 18,000 miles of roadway with 1.5 million gallons of brine and 2,500 tons of salt, nearly 1,500 plow trucks operate as traffic volumes plunged 70% to 80%.
- Officials opened 113 warming centers as Kentucky State Police handled 1,474 calls since noon on January 24, with a couple dozen state routes closed and 25 crashes reported.
- Officials say conditions will worsen into Monday, with crews working 12-hour shifts and warnings that snow, sleet and ice will fall through today and dangerously cold temperatures persist next week.
