Rookie tight end Dante Daniels turns childhood struggles into CFL dream
The Bombers traded up for the 24-year-old tight end because they believe his size and versatility can change their offense.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers traded the 13th overall pick in 2026 and a 2027 second-rounder to the Ottawa Redblacks to move up three spots, selecting 24-year-old tight end Dante Daniels 10th overall.
After facing homelessness and severe family struggles in Windsor, Ontario, Daniels found stability when Jen and Joel Fillion became his legal guardians at age 16, transforming his trajectory.
At six-foot-five and more than 270 pounds, Daniels is described as a "CFL unicorn." Head Coach Mike O'Shea said, "We drafted him because we saw potential and we liked what it could possibly do for our offence."
Quarterback Zach Collaros noted that Daniels creates offensive flexibility; the tight end's dual-threat ability forces defenses to adjust coverage compared to previous sets utilizing Tui Eli.
Outside of football, Daniels has reconnected with his biological father and plans to host his wife, Reagan, in Winnipeg soon. He remains focused on maximizing his professional opportunity in the near future.
