Romania shoots down drone breaching its airspace, says defence ministry

Romania said the drone was destroyed by a Spanish F-18 after entering its airspace, marking the fourth such shoot-down this year, officials said.

  • On Sunday, a Spanish F-18 fighter jet on a NATO air policing mission shot down an unidentified drone illegally breaching Romanian national airspace at 05:01 a.m.
  • The Defence Ministry reported that radars detected the drone entering from neighboring Moldova, some 24 km north of Galati, though officials did not specify its origin.
  • Following standard protocols, the pilot "made radar contact with the target and received permission to engage it," the ministry said; fragments fell in an uninhabited area between two villages.
  • This intervention marks the fourth unmanned aircraft shot down by Romania this year, following the destruction of three Russian drones by Romanian F-16 pilots in July.
  • Since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, NATO has faced repeated airspace breaches; an earlier Russian drone crashed into a Galati apartment block, injuring two people.
