Prabowo Taps Tycoons, Retired Generals, and Religious Leaders as Presidential Advisers

  • On Friday, October 2, 2026, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated his first Presidential Advisory Council at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, appointing 26 members to the body.
  • The appointments arrived well after the statutory deadline, following a law enacted before Prabowo took office that removed the nine-member cap and allowed the expanded council.
  • Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs Pratikno will chair the council, which includes billionaires Chairul Tanjung and Tahir, retired general Agum Gumelar, and religious leaders from Islamic, Christian, Buddhist, and Confucian communities.
  • Wantimpres is tasked with advising the president on executive power under the 1945 Constitution. Pratikno stressed that "Any assignment carried out in the interest of the state and the public must be executed to the best of our ability."
  • These appointments extend a broader shake-up of Prabowo's administration, coming just a day after the president swore in more than a dozen new officials on Thursday, including a new national police chief and foreign minister.
