Rockstar announces FREE Grand Theft Auto upgrade on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
On Thursday, June 18, Rockstar Games will allow players who own the PS4 version or digital Xbox One version of Grand Theft Auto V to upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version for free.
Rockstar has historically required players to purchase new versions outright, marking a notable policy shift after 13 years of requiring new console purchases for each generation.
Upgraded editions feature 'vast technical improvements' and Hao's Special Works high-performance vehicles, with players preparing for the multi-stage Kortz Center Heist launching in July.
PC gamers can also upgrade from the Legacy version to the Enhanced version for free, gaining access to 'PC-only features such as ray-traced ambient occlusion and global illumination.'
This update arrives ahead of the highly anticipated launch of Grand Theft Auto 6, which Rockstar confirmed remains on schedule for November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles.
