‘Robots don’t bleed’: Ukraine sends machines into the battlefield in place of human soldiers

Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said 9,000 robot missions were completed in March as Ukraine expands frontline logistics and combat support.

  • On April 18, Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced Ukraine plans to contract 25,000 ground robotic systems in the first half of 2026, doubling procurement from 2025.
  • Fedorov stated the goal is 100% of frontline logistics performed by robotic systems; since Russia's invasion, the sector expanded to more than 280 companies and over 550 active solutions.
  • Ukrainian forces carried out approximately 21,500 logistics missions during the first quarter of 2026; Mykola Makar Zinkevych, commander of the NC13 unit, said robots stormed enemy positions without infantry involvement.
  • President Volodymyr Zelensky said robots saved lives more than 22,000 times in dangerous areas, while Robert Tollast, a Royal United Services Institute expert, said the advances will fuel debate about warfare's future.
  • The Defense Ministry aims to create a 'kill zone' 15 to 20 kilometers deep along the front line; however, Zinkevych cautioned that final lethal decisions must always remain with humans.
