Roblox to introduce age-based accounts in child safety push
The platform will verify age with face scans or ID checks and limit younger users to vetted games with chat controls.
- Roblox announced on Monday the global launch of Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts, which use mandatory facial age-estimation technology to restrict access for users under 16 to age-appropriate games and features.
- Following reports of child grooming and sexual exploitation, Australian eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant placed Roblox on notice in February, prompting this comprehensive platform overhaul to address safety concerns.
- Games must pass a "rigorous three-step review process" involving Developer Verification, Real-Time Evaluation, and Games Eligibility Check, with Developers required to maintain a paid Roblox Plus subscription at $4.99 per month.
- Parents gain granular control to block specific games individually, while Chat remains disabled by default for younger users, limiting content exposure based on age-appropriate maturity ratings.
- Roblox plans to roll out these accounts globally from June 2026 onwards, as regulators continue monitoring compliance with the Online Safety Act and measuring effectiveness of the new safety measures.
