Peru's Sánchez calls a protest against the result that makes Fujimori the virtual winner
Left-wing candidate Roberto Sánchez called a protest in Lima for Friday against the result of Peru's presidential runoff, which makes right-wing Keiko Fujimori the virtual winner, as the electoral justice was due to decide on the challenges filed by his party. With 99.51% of the tally sheets counted, Fujimori leads Sánchez by some 44,101 votes, though no winner has yet been proclaimed.
The Peruvian capital ordered total closures, police surveillance and restrictions on key accesses, as part of an operation that seeks to safeguard order and protect the heritage against the arrival of delegations for the announced protests
The Peruvian Minister of the Interior, José Zapata, has indicated that "there are 7,000 police officers who are committed to the marches that are being called" only in Lima, in an interview given to the station Exitosa in which he has defended the deployment to "imperish respect for the rights of others, (...) to private and public property, as well."
The Ministry of the Interior rejects the request for guarantee requested by Juntos by the Per for the mobilization of today, Friday, June 19, for having been submitted late.
