Accused Planned Parenthood Shooter Robert Dear Dies in Federal Custody
Robert Dear, charged with killing three in the 2015 Colorado Springs clinic shooting, died after years of being declared mentally incompetent and confined in a mental health facility.
- Federal Bureau of Prisons records show Robert L. Dear, 67, died in federal custody on Nov. 22, 2025 at the United States Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri after being held since Nov. 27, 2015.
- At the heart of the case, federal prosecutors say Robert L. Dear was diagnosed with a delusional disorder per records and repeatedly found incompetent to stand trial.
- Investigators report Dear arrived with four SKS rifles and additional rifles, five handguns, a shotgun and more than 500 rounds of ammunition, firing 198 rounds during a five-hour standoff, killing three people and injuring nine while attempting to destroy propane tanks.
- A federal grand jury returned a 68-count indictment including 65 counts under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, and the U.S. Department of Justice declined the death penalty as appeals led the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit to authorize involuntary medication.
- A judge ruled in September that involuntary medication did not restore Dear to competency, his last state-court appearance was on Nov. 13, and Nov. 27 marks ten years since the attack that killed three and injured nine.
