Rob Sand Kicks Off Iowa Governor Campaign With Andy Beshear
Sand opened his general-election bid with Beshear’s backing as Democrats aim to overcome a 200,000-voter registration deficit.
Democratic nominee for Iowa governor Rob Sand rallies supporters to kick off his campaign alongside Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, who said Sand will "put them first."
The race for governor against Republican Zach Lahn highlights state challenges including budget deficits, a struggling agricultural economy, and a cancer crisis; Sand advocates for "balanced government."
Democrats face a 200,000-person statewide voter registration deficit, though Sand's campaign invested about $750,000 into the Iowa Democratic Party while The Democratic Governors Association contributed about $140,000.
Lahn dismissed Sand as a "liberal career politician pretending to be someone he's not," while Beshear, chair of The Democratic Governors Association, praised the nominee.
If elected, Sand must work with Republican majorities in the House and Senate, which recently passed legislation restricting executive power that Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds signed into law.
