Roads closed when bear spends hours in a New York tree

State wildlife officers tranquilized the 1-year-old bear and plan to release it in the Catskills after it drew a crowd and shut down streets.

  • State wildlife officers from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation captured a 1-year-old black bear in Albany on Tuesday after an hourslong standoff near Second Avenue and Raymo Street.
  • Young male bears frequently disperse into human habitats during spring to search for food, according to DEC wildlife biologist Jeremy Hurst. Albany's proximity to green corridors connecting to the Catskill Mountains makes such encounters possible.
  • Hurst explained that immobilization was the "most expeditious and maybe the safest way" to remove the bear, as crews set up padding and a net below the tree to secure the animal.
  • Following the capture, the bear appeared uninjured and remained conscious in the net. Officials planned to transport the animal to the Catskills for release, while normal traffic resumed on Second Avenue early in the afternoon.
  • This incident marks another occurrence of urban wildlife sightings in Albany. Officials advise residents to maintain distance and contact authorities if they spot a bear in a precarious location.
