Rivers: Gunmen attempt to stop Amaechi from entering his community
Suspected political thugs set fire to ADC secretariat and mounted armed roadblocks to disrupt registration, but Amaechi completed registration amid security intervention.
- On Friday, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation and former governor of Rivers State, faced armed thugs attempting to stop him entering Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area, hours after the ADC Secretariat was destroyed and after he completed ADC registration at ward 8 that morning.
- Party records indicate this is the second reported attack on ADC members in recent months, following an incident in Igwuruta in February 2026.
- Security personnel attached to Amaechi's convoy reportedly thwarted the attack despite sporadic gunfire, and Amaechi praised the state commissioner of police and the Director of the Department of State Services after registering.
- Amaechi called on security agencies to swiftly prosecute those behind the arson, while the Rivers State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement.
- Ahead of planned local meetings, the attacks come amid recent months of repeated targeting of ADC members in the LGA, despite leaders' assurances.
