Bathurst Bedlam as De Pasquale Runs Out of Fuel on Final Lap, Kostecki Wins
Brodie Kostecki and Todd Hazelwood won after Anton De Pasquale ran out of fuel with 5km left, leaving Dick Johnson Racing stunned.
Brodie Kostecki and Todd Hazelwood won the Repco Bathurst for Dick Johnson Racing on Sunday, with leader Pasquale running out of fuel on the final lap just 5km from the finish.
More than 204,000 fans watched the 161-lap race at Mount Panorama in sunny conditions, where fuel and tyre management proved critical for all 26 teams throughout the day.
Leader Pasquale lost power on the final time up Mount Panorama with 5km remaining, later saying he knew "too late" that they were in trouble and "cooked" regarding fuel.
Will Brown and Scott Pye finished second for Triple Eight Racing, while Zach Bates and Aaron Seton secured third place for Matt Stone Racing.
Hazelwood called the win "very, very special" for both drivers, as Kostecki noted his partner Shannen is 37 weeks pregnant, allowing him to celebrate a personal milestone alongside the championship victory.
