Del Toro, Sorkin to Receive AFI Honorary Degrees
The Hollywood veterans will receive honorary doctor of fine arts degrees as AFI celebrates its graduating class of 2026.
- On Aug. 7, the American Film Institute will confer honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degrees upon filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and screenwriter-director Aaron Sorkin at Hollywood's TCL Chinese Theatre.
- AFI President and CEO Bob Gazzale described the pair as "peerless, prolific creative forces" whose contributions to the art form have inspired audiences worldwide and will inspire this year's AFI Conservatory graduates.
- Del Toro, an eight-time Oscar nominee, directed acclaimed films including the 2017 movie The Shape of Water and the 2025 version of Frankenstein, which he recently released on Netflix.
- Sorkin, an Academy Award winner for The Social Network, penned works including Few Good Men and The West Wing, with his new film The Social Reckoning arriving on Oct. 9.
- The ceremony honors the AFI Conservatory Class of 2026, joining a prestigious roster of past recipients that includes legends like Viola Davis, Mel Brooks, and Helen Mirren.
