Right Livelihood Award Honors Women Taking on Autocrats, Discrimination and Unchecked AI
The prize recognized 200 nominees from 72 countries for defending democracy, women’s rights and fairer artificial intelligence.
- On Wednesday, the Stockholm-based Right Livelihood foundation awarded its annual prize to two women and two women-led organizations, selected from 200 nominations across 72 countries.
- Created in 1980 by Swedish-German philanthropist Jakob von Uexkull, the award honors work contributing to a just world, recognizing recipients for their "resistance to systems that push people to the margins."
- Pakistani human rights lawyer Jalila Haider received the prize for breaking barriers, with her firm helping more than 600 activists regain freedom; Ethiopian-born AI researcher Timnit Gebru was honored for challenging concentrated power in technology.
- The Georgian Young Lawyers Association won for safeguarding democracy and sustaining civic power, while the Rural Women's Assembly was honored for organizing more than 178,000 small-scale farmers across 11 nations to defend land rights.
- Ole von Uexkull, the organization's executive director, said the winners are "rewriting the rules that autocrats, patriarchs and Silicon Valley's most powerful men assumed were theirs," as the announcement precedes the Nobel Prizes starting next Monday.
