B.C. Student Cycles 270 Km, Raises $7.7K for Wildfire Evacuees
The fundraiser has already surpassed $7,000 online as Reid aims to support the Canadian Red Cross wildfire appeal.
- On Sunday, Aug. 16, Lake Country resident and UBC Okanagan student Ains Reid completed a 270-kilometre bike ride from Saskatoon to Regina, raising more than $7,500 for British Columbia wildfire evacuees.
- Motivated by memories of the 2023 McDougall Creek wildfire, Reid decided to help after watching recent Okanagan Valley fires from afar, stating, "I just remember how scared everybody was at that time."
- Executing the fundraiser in just one week, Reid finished the journey in 11.5 hours of rolling time, with $7,000 donated online within the first 24 hours of launching the link.
- Beyond immediate relief, Reid hopes his story encourages others to embrace active transportation and reduce fossil fuel reliance to help combat climate-related disasters like wildfires.
- Although the journey is complete, the fundraiser remains open to support the 2026 British Columbia Wildfires Appeal while Reid prepares to return to UBC Okanagan in a couple of weeks.
