Richland County Man Charged in Connection with SC State Shooting
The shootings occurred during homecoming celebrations and led to campus lockdown and event cancellations, with one woman killed and one man hospitalized, according to South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
- On Oct. 4, South Carolina State University faced two separate shootings during its Homecoming celebration, killing one woman and injuring a man, which triggered a campus-wide lockdown and event cancellations.
- An affidavit shows a man retrieved a Glock from his vehicle after an altercation at 117 Jenerette Street, and Matthew Daniel McCoy was charged with firing two shots, SLED said.
- Orangeburg County Coroner Sean Fogle identified the deceased as 19-year-old Jaliyah Butler, pronounced dead at MUSC Health Orangeburg, and officials said neither victim was a South Carolina State University student.
- The 1st Circuit Solicitor's Office will prosecute the case as South Carolina Law Enforcement Division continues its probe; South Carolina State University canceled classes for Monday and scheduled a virtual town hall for Oct. 5 at 6 p.m.
- University officials described added safety measures including controlled entry points, increased camera monitoring and enhanced communications, while South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said the shootings are not believed connected.
