Richard Lee ‘Dick’ Fain, 87, Brookville

Richard Lee Fain, age 87, of Brookville, Indiana, died Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at his residence in Brookville, following a lengthy illness. Born August 20, 1938, in Fayette County, Indiana, he was the only child of the late Oscar Lee & Floria Catherine (Semler) Fain. A graduate of Earlham College, he earned his master’s degree from Indiana University. On August 26, 1962, he was united in marriage to Margaret Ellen Wolber. Before his retirement, Dick taught Spanish at the former Brookville High School from 1960 until 1989. He taught Geology during summer school to students and adults. For several years, he enjoyed playing cards with other retired teachers and friends until they all preceded him in death. Dick and Maggie sponsored numerous foreign exchange students and led student trips to Mexico for many years. In 1967, they chaperoned a 4-H teen caravan of 16 older teenagers for a summer in Peru, South America, sponsored by Purdue University state 4-H clubs.

Richard Lee Fain, age 87, of Brookville, Indiana, died Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at his residence in Brookville, following a lengthy illness. Born August 20, 1938, in Fayette County, Indiana, he was the only child of the late Oscar Lee & Floria Catherine (Semler) Fain. A graduate of Earlham College, he earned his master’s degree from Indiana University. On August 26, 1962, he was united in marriage to Margaret Ellen Wolber. Before his retirement, Dick taught Spanish at the former Brookville High School from 1960 until 1989. He taught Geology during summer school to students and adults. For several years, he enjoyed playing cards with other retired teachers and friends until they all preceded him in death. Dick and Maggie sponsored numerous foreign exchange students and led student trips to Mexico for many years. In 1967, they chaperoned a 4-H teen caravan of 16 older teenagers for a summer in Peru, South America, sponsored by Purdue University state 4-H clubs. Locals knew Dick as “the Donut Man,” as he spent time buying donuts to deliver to elderly shut-in friends and the local nursing home. He was a member of St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Brookville; a 50-year member of the Milton Masonic Lodge #108; as well as the Franklin County Retired Teachers Association. Besides Margaret, his loving wife of over 64 years, survivors include two sons, Richard Lee Fain II (Mary) of Connersville, Indiana and Ross Jay Fain (Nicole) of Brookville, Indiana, a daughter in law, Laura Fain (Mike) of Boulder, Colorado; eight grandchildren, Nicholas M. Fain, Elliott C. Fain (Jackie), Madison Margaret Steffel (Will), Samantha Lee Fain, Dustin M. Fain (Ainsley), Kelsey Lynn Ludwig (Tim), Owen Daniel Fain, Katherine Nicole Fain; four great grandchildren with one more on the way, Beckett Michael Fain, Olivia Scott Fain, Gracelyn Nicole Ludwig, and Harlan Michael Ludwig. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Dr. Michael Scott Fain, who died October 21, 2020. A memorial service is being planned with a date to be determined. Memorial contributions may be directed to Earlham College or Indiana University. The staff of Phillips & Meyers Funeral Home are honored to serve the Fain family.
