Retired Bureaucrat Loses Life in Delhi House Fire; AC Explosion Eyed
Police said the fire may have started in an air-conditioner unit, and five people were inside the house when the blaze broke out.
Retired Indian Administrative Service officer Dhanender Kumar died Wednesday night after a fire broke out at his South Delhi residence in Hauz Khas; he succumbed to smoke inhalation at the AIIMS Trauma Centre, Deputy Commissioner of Police Anant Mittal said.
Authorities suspect an explosion in an air conditioner's indoor unit triggered the blaze, which spread to wooden articles on the ground floor as electrical inspectors investigate possible causes including short-circuit and overheating.
Five people, including family members and two domestic workers, were inside the house during the incident; Kumar's son was rescued alongside his father and remains under medical care, reported to be out of danger.
Delhi Fire Service and police personnel responded immediately, extinguishing the blaze with two fire tenders; investigators recorded eyewitness statements and found no indications of foul play at this stage.
Kumar previously served as Executive Director at the World Bank and became the first Chairman of the Competition Commission of India, also holding senior roles including Principal Secretary to the Haryana Chief Minister and Secretary in the Ministry of Defence.
