Rethinking United Nations mediation
The primary goal of conflict mediation at the United Nations has been to establish a sustainable peace through broad, inclusive processes. In recent years, however, UN diplomats have faced a disunited UN Security Council (UNSC) and state mediators prioritising deal-making over peace-making. In light of these challenges, the UN has been required to adopt a flexible approach, complementing other actors while leveraging its own unique strengths
