Researchers have developed a test that can detect sepsis within hours instead of days by monitoring red blood cell depletion in blood samples spiked with E. coli bacteria.
The test involves incubating samples at different orbital shaking speeds, which promotes the formation of a bacteria-rich plasma-like layer on top and causes blood cell clusters to sink to the bottom.
