Rescuers halt search for two last men lost in Laos cave
Rescuers said unstable cave conditions and rising water left only a slim chance of finding the two men alive, officials said.
- Rescuers called off the search Saturday for two men trapped in a semi-submerged cave in Laos for more than two weeks, as the site became unstable and survival hopes faded.
- Seven villagers were trapped by flash floods in Xaysomboun Province on May 20 while hunting bats and searching for gold in old mining areas, state media said.
- The five survivors were discovered huddled around 300 metres from the cave's entrance, while the two missing men had entered the site separately, complicating the search.
- Thai lead rescuer Kengkad Bongkawong said on Saturday that "no one is allowed inside the cave" because "it is too risky for anyone to enter", but water pumping operations would persist outside.
- Malaysian cave diver Lee Kian Lie told AFP the mission is at an "end" as risks of continuing outweighed slim chances of rescue, though the cave entrance had become dangerously unstable.
