Rescuers fly from Comox to Fort Nelson to help B.C. hunter injured by horse
NORTHERN ROCKIES, BRITISH COLUMBIA, JUL 15 – Search and Rescue Technicians parachuted into rugged terrain to aid an injured rider, with the operation lasting 16 hours and involving aircraft from 19 Wing Comox.
- At 10 p.m. on July 15, 2025, a rider injured by a horse east of Fort Nelson prompted rescue by parachuting Search and Rescue Technicians, lasting 16 hours.
- With no local air or ground support, the RCMP requested aid from the Royal Canadian Air Force, using a CC-295 Kingfisher and CH-149 Cormorant helicopter from 19 Wing Comox.
- Search and Rescue Technicians parachuted from the CC-295 Kingfisher, hiked to the injured rider, provided immediate medical support, and the mission lasted around 16 hours.
- The CH-149 Cormorant helicopter extracted the hunter to Fort Nelson, then he was transferred onto the Kingfisher and flown to Prince George for higher-level emergency medical care.
- In future remote emergencies, such parachute operations could be crucial, highlighting the RCAF’s night-time rescue capabilities and preparedness for complex scenarios.
