Rescued Lioness Undergoes Huge Operation at Kent Animal Park
The three-year-old lioness received surgery to remove an 8cm infected canine tooth and a root canal on the opposing tooth to ensure recovery, experts said.
- On October 10, Lira, three-year-old lioness, underwent critical dental surgery at The Big Cat Sanctuary, Smarden, Kent, performed by dentist Peter Kertesz from Zoodent International.
- The Big Cat Sanctuary's new enclosure, The Lion Rescue Centre, began construction in July 2024 and opened on March 25 this year to house rescued lions from Ukraine.
- Mr Kertesz said, 'When I examined Lira's jaw and mouth, I could see immediately the broken tooth was severely infected,' after removing an 8cm lower canine and performing a root canal on the opposing tooth.
- The Big Cat Sanctuary added, `Lira will be a little uncomfortable to begin with, but now that the toxins are out of her body, she will start to feel much better over the coming days.`
- Peter Kertesz, who has treated about 450 big cats, said the infection likely stemmed from trauma at 1.5 to 2 years old and used human-like materials for treatment.
