Rescue efforts underway at B.C. mine where three workers are trapped underground
BRITISH COLUMBIA, JUL 24 – Three miners remain trapped after two collapses blocked access and cut communication; rescue teams are using specialized technology to restore contact and ensure safety, officials said.
- On Tuesday, three workers were trapped underground in a refuge chamber after two rockfalls obstructed their exit routes at the Red Chris copper and gold mine located in northern British Columbia.
- The workers were located over 500 metres away from the impacted area and had moved to a designated refuge shelter before a second collapse limited their ability to move and communicate.
- Newmont Corp., which holds a 70 percent stake in the gold and copper mine built in 2014, stated that the trapped miners are unharmed and currently taking refuge in a MineARC safety chamber that can accommodate up to 16 individuals.
- Newmont and provincial authorities are working with rescue specialists while using a remote-controlled scoop to remove debris and deploying drones to assess underground conditions, although communication with the workers remains limited.
- Operations at the mine have been halted, and officials report that the workers have sufficient supplies of air, water, and food to remain safely sheltered for an indefinite period as rescue efforts proceed without a set schedule.
