In the province of the Datem del Marañón, in the jungle of Loreto, mothers carry their babies with coughs and rock them to calm them down. They think it is just a cold, but it is not. It is the pertussis, a disease that has killed 10 children in Peru in 2025 (nine died in Loreto and one in Lima). Also known as convulsed cough, it is caused by the bacteria Bordetella pertussis and can be fatal, especially in children under five years of age.
