Republican Candidates Hilton and Bianco Lead California Governor Poll
Two Republicans lead California's crowded gubernatorial primary as Democrats remain divided, raising the chance of a GOP general election faceoff, poll shows 17% and 16% support respectively.
- On Wednesday, a UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll showed Steve Hilton at 17% and Chad Bianco at 16% among likely voters, based on 5,019 surveyed from March 9-15 with a 2.5-point margin of error.
- Because of California's top-two primary rules, a split Democratic field could allow two Republicans to advance to the November general election as Republican voters consolidate behind Hilton and Bianco.
- Republican voters prioritized cutting waste, fraud and political corruption, cited by 48, while Tom Steyer's ad spending lifted support to 10%.
- Democratic leaders are urging candidates to exit ahead of April 15, but as of Tuesday low-polling gubernatorial candidates under 5% had not said if they'd drop out before the June 2 primary.
- No Republican has won statewide in California since 2006, when Arnold Schwarzenegger was last elected governor, and poll director Mark DiCamillo warned voters remain fractured despite undecided voters falling to about 16%.
