Republicans dump cash into red states as they try to hold the line against Democrats in the midterms
Trump-aligned groups have spent more than $163 million since Sept. 1 as Republicans try to defend vulnerable seats and counter Democratic momentum.
Since Sept. 1, Republican-aligned groups including MAGA Inc., No Going Back PAC, and Safety and Affordability PAC have spent more than $163 million on advertising, with nearly 40% directed to states Trump won by 10 percentage points or more in 2024.
Mounting pressure from endangered candidates in battleground states forced Republicans to defend typically secure strongholds. Texas, Iowa, Ohio, and Alaska—all won by President Donald Trump in 2024—have become increasingly competitive battlegrounds in the midterms.
In Texas, Republicans spent nearly $107 million to bolster Attorney General Ken Paxton against Democratic state Rep. James Talarico, while Ohio Republican spending to defend Sen. Jon Husted exceeded $152 million compared to $90 million for Democratic nominee Sherrod Brown.
Vice President JD Vance recently traveled to Kansas to campaign for Sen. Roger Marshall against Democratic nominee Adam Hamilton, while the White House invests time in previously non-competitive states and Trump hits the road.
Despite record spending, Republicans remain concerned about a 'glum' electorate angry over high gas prices and the war in Iran. Republican strategist Terry Casey noted the election outcome depends on whether Democrats can successfully turn out their voters.
